Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the second China International Import Expo in Shanghai on November 5, where he announced the opening of the expo and delivered a keynote speech. The following is an edited excerpt of Xi’s remarks:
我們要以更加開放的心態和舉措，共同把全球市場的蛋糕做大、把全球共享的機制做實、把全球合作的方式做活，共同把經濟全球化動力搞得越大越好、阻力搞得越小越好。
We must have a more open mindset and take more open steps, and work together to make the pie of the global market even bigger. We need to strengthen the mechanisms for sharing benefits globally and explore new ways of international cooperation. The goal is to give more impetus to economic globalization and remove impediments as much as we could.
我們應該堅持以開放求發展，深化交流合作，堅持“拉手”而不是“松手”，堅持“拆墻”而不是“筑墻”，堅決反對保護主義、單邊主義，不斷削減貿易壁壘，推動全球價值鏈、供應鏈更加完善，共同培育市場需求。
We need to promote development through opening up and deepen exchanges and cooperation among us. We need to “join hands” with each other instead of “letting go” of each other’s hands. We need to “tear down walls”, not to “erect walls”. We need to stand firm against protectionism and unilateralism. We need to continually bring down trade barriers, optimize global value and supply chains, and jointly foster market demand.
中國將更加重視進口的作用，進一步降低關稅和制度性成本，培育一批進口貿易促進創新示范區，擴大對各國高質量產品和服務的進口。
China will give greater importance to import. We will continue to lower tariffs and institutional transaction costs, develop demonstration zones to promote import trade by creative means, and import more high-quality goods and services from around the world.
我們將堅持對外開放的基本國策，堅持以開放促改革、促發展、促創新，持續推進更高水平的對外開放。
第一，繼續擴大市場開放；
第二，繼續完善開放格局；
第三，繼續優化營商環境；

China will adhere to its fundamental state policy of opening up and stay committed to opening up to promote reform, development and innovation. This will bring about opening up at an even higher level.
First, China will continue to open up its market.

Fourth, China will continue to deepen multilateral and bilateral cooperation.
